Reg, Yes, if everyone used 50-50 PT it would be fantastic. But on genetic gain the herd that uses only the top 2 or 3 sires on genetic merit compared to the herd that uses 50-50 PT and Proven will on average be in front. I also like the idea of the above prediction ASI cows. These cows can pop up in any herd and will be of benefit to the breed. Cheers Steve |

Some great ideas going around, although I dont have a problem with the same farmer getting the same award if they continue to have the top herd. But maybe the top ASI awards could be given out every 2nd year, as genetic merit takes time to improve in a breeding program, to keep the award valued. Working out how to incorporate a commitment to developing the breed through progeny testing into the award will be the trick. We dont have the resources like the Holstein and Jersey societies, so I think the system needs needs to be simple, inclusive and easily verified. One idea to qualify may be small herds have to LTE 5 heifers by a current progeny test bull/s. This would cost $25 herd visit + $11 per heifer = $80. A large herd would have to LTE 10 heifers by a current progeny test bull/s ($135). I know it is another cost, but we could easily verify the requirements with Jersey House with the data from ADHIS, without having to chase up farmers. Do you think that would work? |

Hi all The LTE clause in these awards should definitely NOT be part of these awards as the LTE’s are only carried out on a percentage of herds using progeny test. This would make this grossly unfair for different states who hardly ever get LTE’s done e.g. Qld & Tas. And different and smaller herds that get visited every few years. I use 200 – 250 doses of progeny test a year and I don’t get a LTE visit every year. Skeeta has never had an LTE done on his farm. I know that Michael Riggs classifies all is heifers himself because he doesn’t get the visits but when you have been through 10 years of drought or at any time when money is tight ,classifying animals is the last thing that you are going to squeeze into the budget. We want these awards for everyone and to encourage new breeders not just for a select few. Regards Greg Goulding |
